Exploring Plant Endangerment
Concept: When creating this project, I wanted to do anything I could to help the viewer experience extinction. It is hard to be truly passionate about any one thing without having any sense of connection to it. This piece was my way of creating that connection between the viewer and the plant kingdom. The centerpiece of this project was two sculptural chairs, which were created to be purposely uncomfortable when sat in. However, they were also created to look delicate. As if when you sat in them, they would break. Endangerment is not a comfortable conversation. It is delicate and needs our help to begin to heal.
Target Audience: This project was created with the hope that it could reach as many people as possible. It aimed to draw people and ignite a passion to help our planet.
Skills: This project incorporated both traditional art elements as well as design elements. The brochures, manner, and Phytophila logo were all made with a combination of Adobe’s Illustrator and InDesign. I used colored pencils to create the drawings used for the brochures and banners. As for the two chairs, they were created using a combination of welding, carpentry, and foam sculpting.
Problems and Solutions: Throughout this project, I encountered various obstacles that I had to overcome. Specifically, I found the biggest issue to be keeping everything cohesive. There were many pieces to this project, which were created over the span of a few months. Because of that, I found myself revisiting all the pieces to help create a better sense of cohesion between all the elements. I found this not only to help with cohesion, but I also found that by revisiting the creations, I was able to look at my own work with a fresh set of eyes and reevaluate the design choices I made.
